A Bit on Bacon

1 03 2011

You don’t have to tell me how delicious a juicy steak is or for you vegans/vegetarians how good carrots are for my eyes or blue berries for my brain. Production agriculture has a healthy, nutritious and delicious morsel for everyone and even provides for that favorite cotton T or pair of blue jeans. But now mother nature is taking the benefits of production agriculture to a whole new level.

If you are lucky enough to be 21 or older and live in the Champaign-Urbana area than your Friday morning, day, afternoon, evening and night is looking pretty, well fun, at this point with “Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day” right around the corner. For those of you outside this niche university community it is the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign’s excuse for an entire day of drunkenness (you can find out more at U of I Wiki).

So how does Agriculture relate to this unofficial holiday? Production agriculture provides for all beverages students partake of on this almost-sacred university tradition. Thus it is somewhat responsible for the ill side effects if such beverages are abused. However, mother nature had a contingency plan: bacon.

That’s right! Research has shown that bacon is a fabulous cure for the morning-after, alcohol-induced symptoms. While any food speeds up the body’s metabolism, which helps rid the body of the alcohol more quickly, bacon also provides amino acids which restores damaged neurotransmitters.

What is even better than bacon?

A bacon sandwich. The bread from the sandwich portion of this winning combination gives you the energy to make it to that 8 a.m. class… or 4 p.m. class (and yes, even work!). Research by Newcastle University’s Centre for Life also found a second winning combination: the taste and smell of bacon (due to a complex chemical interaction through the cooking process…. like we needed a study to tell us that)!

So the next time you have a night on the town (or a morning!), toast to agriculture. Without we would all be naked, hungry, and possibly-hungover.

P.S. GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon general, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.
